EMPATHY TRAINING FOR HEALTHCARE

Darren Murphy recently returned from Ukraine where he presented a workshop for newly graduated medical doctors and final year medical students attending the International Medical School at Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine.

The subject they asked for:  how to tell bad news to patients and families.

In America it is called empathy training. Darren calls it common sense coupled with discerning what the other person needs at that moment in time. While not everyone is alike and not everyone requires the same level of empathy; everyone does require and greatly appreciates being communicated with in the manner most comfortable to them. People like people who are like themselves.

Imagine your staff knowing exactly what to say, how to say it and when to follow up with family when sentinel events happen. Imagine your staff also knowing what works for one personality style is not necessarily the best for a different personality style.
